The things I wish I knew...
I was over at my friends house visiting her newborn son. Seeing him brought up some nostalgia of my boys when they were little babies, then something else hit me like a semi; panic sheer and utter panic!
No one tells you about the panic that you feel as a new mom, the insta-mommy guilt or the crazy hormonal roller coaster for the first couple of weeks. Breastfeeding is not as natural as you would think it would be & that self doubt would be my new hobby!
There are a lot of things that I wish the parenting books told me about being a Mom, like everything that I read would not apply to my pregnancy/child.
I was around a lot of kids growing up, I did my share of babysitting & was pretty good with little ones.
When they are yours everything that you thought you knew goes out the window!
Lets back up a minute to pregnancy all the books, even your birthing class tell you about the factual things. The statistical facts gathered & what the normal is; well normal is boring....
How about the real life stuff?!
The hey BTW if your body isn't big enough to handle the mammoth baby you have inside you that it might try to evict him WAY too early (this actually happened with both my boys), I know that you really wanted that coffee; oh ya you just got off of bed rest too running some really important errands this is the PERFECT time for your water to break in a public bathroom, gushing everywhere!
My favorite was you know how you rotate to meet all the doctors in the practice so you get to meet them all. Well you won't have any of them for your emergency c - section, you might need a blood transfusion & the medicine that will make you stop bleeding will make you really sick & you won't remember much of anything from the delivery of your first born son.
(my pregnancy wasn't much better with my second BUT my delivery was a lot smoother just an FYI)
There are SO many unknowns during pregnancy & parenthood I don't think there could be a book or blog that could possibly address EVERYTHING....
EVERY person is going to have a different experience & NO child is the same.
What I learned as a parent is that I have to listen to my mommy instincts & do what is right for my kids they best way that I know how.
Find support, ask questions LOTS of questions & DO NOT judge listen to what others have to say.
Normal is boring plain and simple; that is what I have experienced with my first son, Declan. He has taught me SO much in 9 years; about myself, my expectation of parenthood, life; honestly he has helped me to be the person I am today.
